A la Mostra de Venise déjà, en septembre dernier, on sentait les critiques anglo-saxons un peu gênés aux entournures par la façon dont le film regarde ses actrices ses acteurs aussi, mais surtout ses actrices sous toutes les coutures, amoureusement, frénétiquement, dans une sorte d’affolement érotomane débridé. Pas besoin de revoir des vieux Hitchcock, Truffaut ou Tarantino, pour s’interroger sur la façon dont les hommes filment les femmes, sur ce que les réalisateurs exigent, sur la part d’abandon et de pouvoir mêlés qui constitue le métier de comédienne Mektoub déboule pour résumer et circonscrire à lui tout seul le débat. Car le male gaze n’est pas seulement la manière du film, c’est aussi son sujet. ALTER EGO Le nouveau Kechiche raconte l’été désœuvré d’un jeune mec beau comme un Dieu, à Sète, en 1994. Il ne faut pas longtemps pour identifier Amin comme un alter-ego du réalisateur. C’est un garçon sensible et délicat, qui s’intéresse au cinéma et à la photo, passe des après-midi les volets fermés devant des films d’Alexandre Dovjenko. Il aime aussi regarder les filles bronzer sur la plage le jour et danser en boîte la nuit, observer ses cousins et ses potes les draguer, les vieux tontons libidineux les importuner, l’alcool couler à flots, les cœurs se briser, les mecs devenir fous de désir, et les filles en retour affirmer leur pouvoir, leur volupté, leur liberté. Amin désire aussi, mais il est toujours en retrait, discret, un peu vampire, sans doute puceau. Il préfère mater de loin, à travers un objectif. Il est le cinéaste embarqué à l’intérieur même du film, celui qui justifie que la caméra s’attarde aussi longuement lourdement sur les corps des filles. Le regard de Kechiche est insistant. Parfois limite. Mais c’est manifestement le prix à payer pour arriver à l’état de transe recherché, l’extase sensorielle obtenue à coups d’exagérations la durée des scènes, la banalité quotidienne des dialogues, la redondance des situations, le défilé de fesses callipyges et censé nous permettre d’accéder à une vérité supérieure, presque un état mystique. Au cœur du film, une longue séquence à la fois éreintante et superbe fonctionne comme un plaidoyer pro-domo, un discours de la méthode Amin est déterminé à prendre en photo une brebis à l’instant où elle met bas. Comme Kechiche, l’apprenti artiste veut capter le moment précis du surgissement de la vie. Alors c’est long, dérangeant regard face caméra de la brebis qui se demande ce qu’on fout là ! puis bouleversant le soir tombe, l’agneau naît, on en pleurerait. APRÈS ADÈLE Débraillé, hirsute, interminable, sans épine dorsale autre que le temps qui s’écoule comme il s’écoule quand on a 18 ans et la vie devant soi, Mektoub my love ressemble à ces films que les grands cinéastes tournent après avoir signé un chef-d’œuvre officiel et reçu tous les honneurs, quand ils radicalisent leur démarche et deviennent les empereurs tout-puissant du système autarcique qu’ils ont bâti. C’est David Lynch tournant Inland Empire après Mulholland Drive, Wong Kar-wai 2046 après In the mood for love, ou Malick se lançant dans son cycle autobiographique à partir de The Tree of Life. Que faire après le triomphe de La Vie d’Adèle ? Kechiche décide de dégraisser, se débarrasse du filtre social qui aiguillait Adèle ou La Graine et le Mulet, de la rage politique qui propulsait Vénus Noire. La société est là, bien sûr, le monde aussi, Hafsia Herzi raconte un voyage en Tunisie, on comprend qu’on ne drague pas à Sète comme à Nice, qu’on ne fait pas la fête chez les prolos comme chez les bourgeois… Mais tout est réduit à sa plus simple expression, comme dans un geste pointilliste. Les premiers plans du film suffisent à définir un monde deux citations l’une du Coran, l’autre de Saint-Jean célébrant la lumière, la mobylette d’un restaurant de couscous à l’arrière-plan, un couple qui baise bruyamment. On pourrait être chez Rohmer les vacances d’été, le marivaudage adolescent ou chez un épigone de Pialat la force brute, la tentation picturale. Mais les manières chamaniques de Kechiche transcendent ici toute une tradition de récit d’apprentissage à la française pour aboutir à une matière abrasive, ardente, presque délirante dans sa célébration frénétique du sexe et de la vie. L’été est chaud, les filles sont belles, le soleil écrase tout. Et le cinéma de Kechiche est à poil, sublime.
